This came in among my Google news alerts. It's from an op-ed piece on one of Alan Keyes' websites by John Haskins, Associate Director of the extremist Massacusetts anti-gay group known as the Parents' Rights Coalition.
Haskins is reminiscing on the presence of GLBT families at this year's White House Easter Egg Roll. To him, this event represents a pivotal surrender by Christians in the eternal war between good and evil:
Another incremental surrender DID occur and history WAS made in this White House Easter Egg Roll, in an almost irreversible way. Homosexuals, bearing their trophy children — helpless prisoners in the War Against Future Generations — were welcomed without so much as blink of an eye at a family event on a high Christian holy day. (emphasis mine)
Alan Keyes, John Haskins and all their sadly homo-sex obsessed ilk live in a bizarre parallel world — where Christianity is under attack from a vast and powerful homosexual conspiracy to enslave the nation's youth and entirely destroy Judeo-Christian civilization. I wish I was making this stuff up, but I'm not. These extremist anti-gay groups make James Dobson's Focus on the Family look like Gay Days at Disney.
You'd think Haskins was talking about Al Qaeda, not gay moms and dads... Who are we, we terrible homosexuals with our helpless, imprisoned trophy children? We are
those who plot and scheme tirelessly against the innocence of our children, and against our rights as parents to defend them ... who have sworn enmity against our God ... the 'enemies' of your children and grandchildren
And we're not fooling anybody with our photo ops and talk of 'families.' What we really want is nothing less than
a propaganda coup by the homosexual movement ... a homosexual revolution that represents the total and final defeat of Judeo-Christian civilization and morality
I sometimes wonder what really drives people like Keyes and Haskins and Phelps and co. Do they lie awake at night, seating with visions of moral apocalypse, tormented by their fears, struggling perhaps with their own deeply buried and unnameable desires...? Do they feel the threat of homosexuality pressing against them in their sleep, like some dread succubus or incubus bearing down as they lie helpless and paralyzed with fear?
The hatred in these people's writings and public utterances is palpable and visceral. We are not simply people with whom they disagree. We are the embodiment of all that is evil, the latter day manifestation of Lucifer incarnate, ready to drag all of humanity into the pit through our unconscionable depravity.
Replace the words 'homosexual' and 'Judeo-Christian' in the above with 'Jew' and 'Aryan' and you will begin to see who we are to these people.
When will moderate Christian followers of Jesus understand the nature of this cancer that is bringing forth such poisoned fruit in their midst? When will they have the courage to stop calling these people 'conservative Christians' and name this detestable religion for what it is — a credo of hate centered on a vengeful, genocidal 'god', determined to raise itself up on the dead and silenced bodies of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered and otherwise queer or queer-affirming people? How far must these 'Judeo-Christian' supremacists take their anti-queer jihad before the Church will begin to wake up and realize that these people mean business, and that for them this is a zero-sum game?
Where does this rhetoric lead?
How many more Matthew Shepards? How many more transgendered teen murders?
'Civilized' Europeans in the 1920s and 1930s all knew Hitler was nuts. It couldn't happen here, they thought. This is Europe, not some backward place like America. But it did happen. And the mainstream churches looked on, complicit, while millions were marginalized, persecuted, oppressed, tortured and ultimately exterminated, all in the name of civilization. The Nazis destroyed their civilization and trampled on every one of its noblest values, even as they claimed to be saving both.
And so the cycle of hatred and justification goes on.
