I was riding the bus past a nearby Lutheran church the other day, and noticed the sign out front that read: "A HATE FREE ZONE". It struck me at that moment that for this sign to be necessary in the first place, there has to be so much wrong with what passes as 'Christian' faith for so many people these days.
God does not hate. Cannot hate. It's not that God loves, or is full of love, or is the source of all love. By definition and acccording to the New Testament, God IS love.
GOD = LOVE
What are we, then, to make of this site, godhatesamerica.com, brought to us by our strange friends at Westboro Baptist Church? Apparently God hates not only us fags, but the entire country for allowing George Bush to send his 'fag army' to capture Babylon. I'm sorry, but you have to read it for yourself to see the completely demented picture of God that is the inevitable result of believing that God favors only an exceptional few and damns the rest to hell:
WBC rejoices every time the Lord God in His vengeance kills or maims an American soldier with an Improvised Explosive Device (IED). "The righteous shall rejoice when he seeth the vengeance: he shall wash his feet in the blood of the wicked" (Ps. 58:10).
This nation bombed and raided the Westboro Baptist Church, and now the Holy God that Inhabits Eternity is repaying those heinous acts with His retaliatory wrath; "Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord" (Rom. 12:19).
To most effectively cause America to know her abominations (Ez. 16:2), WBC will picket the funerals of these Godless, fag army American soldiers when their pieces return home. WBC will also picket their landing spot, in Dover, Delaware early and often.
Face it, America! You have become a fag-filled nation of flag worshipers and necromancers. Your only terrorist is the Lord your God! He fights against you personally. "And I myself will fight against you with an outstretched hand and with a strong arm, even in anger, and in fury, and in great wrath" (Jer. 21:5).
A lot of hate-talk about God is pathological. By that I mean it stems from an inadequacy (or dis-ease) in the speaker, rather than from any deep truth about God. The same can be said about biblical texts that attribute wrath and vengeance to God. I suspect that the speaker or writer is projecting human fears and prejudices onto a divine canvas for theatrical or theological effect, rather than expressing an enternal truth about the divine.
However, one place where the Bible does speak quite clearly and non-anthropomorphically concerning God and hate is in the following passage from Proverbs:
There are six things the LORD hates,
seven that are detestable to him:
haughty eyes,
a lying tongue,
hands that shed innocent blood,
a heart that devises wicked schemes,
feet that are quick to rush into evil,
a false witness who pours out lies
and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers.
Proverbs 6:16-19
Interestingly, these words condemn the very kind of hate language and lies used by Westboro Baptist and countless others to incite resentment, hatred and violence against the GLBT community and other minorities.
God, search my heart and cleanse it of these sins - haughtiness, lying, bloodshed, scheming, rushing to evil, deliberate falsification, stirring up dissension. Give me a clean heart that I may through word AND deed show Your love to the world. Amen.
